We are seeking a new Trustee, committed to social justice and with experience of working in low to medium income countries.
Role Description
1. Background
EA Foundation was set up in 2021 to improve the lives of disadvantaged communities around the world, with a particular focus on improving access to education and basic services, relieving poverty, promoting environmentally sustainable development and supporting emergency response appeals.
The Foundation was set up by the co-founders of Energy Aspects, a data & intelligence company headquartered in the UK. We are an independent charitable foundation registered in England and Wales. The Foundation owns shares in the company and this is our primary source of income for both operational costs and our annual grants budget. The Foundation has been scaling up its grant-making since receiving approximately £5m of income in 2022 from selling a portion of these shares. We have awarded approximately £3.6m in grants since 2021, mostly for projects in low to middle-income countries. Our funding budget will increase as we develop our strategy for future grant-making post 2026.
EA Foundation is managed on a day-to-day basis by a Director who works closely with the Chair of the Board of Trustees. The Director is supported by a committed bank of volunteers in various areas including communications and IT.
More information about our work can be found on our website at: https://www.ea-foundation.org.uk/
2. Board of Trustees
EA Foundation is currently governed by a dynamic team of six (6) Trustees who bring a diverse range of expertise, four of whom started the Foundation to consolidate their private giving and areas of interest. Two independent Trustees were recruited to ensure balance and objectivity.
The Board meets a minimum of four (4) times a year to shape the strategic direction of the Foundation and make decisions on grant awards.
As a relatively young Foundation, we are at an exciting stage of our growth, and as we strengthen our funded partnerships, we are seeking to appoint at least one new Trustee with demonstrable commitment to addressing social injustice and supporting community-led partnerships. We primarily fund projects working in low to medium-income countries and would particularly welcome applications from individuals with experience in these regions.
3. Duties of a Trustee
According to the Charity Commission, as a grant-maker, Trustees must work in the best interest of the charity, enhancing its reputation, applying their skills and experience to provide strategic direction, setting governing policies, defining goals, and evaluating impact. Additionally, Trustees must work to ensure that the Foundation:
4. Time Commitment
The term of office is three (3) years for a maximum of three terms. Trustees hold four (4) meetings a year. Currently, two meetings per year are dedicated to grant awards. Trustees are expected to attend all meetings, and where they are unable to, will be expected to provide feedback on any relevant agenda items. Meetings are held in Canary Wharf, London and trustees are encouraged to attend in person barring exceptional circumstances.
5. Person Specification
We wish to strengthen and diversify our Board to ensure a wide range of experience and skills that will contribute positively to our decision-making capacity. We welcome applications from anyone regardless of their age, disability, ethnicity, heritage, sexuality, gender and socio-economic background.
6. Specific Skills and Experience
The Board seeks to attract individuals with the following:
